Reminder: Charter Appreciation Rally
Taking the Fight to Harrisburg - #SAVETHEACADEMY
On Wednesday, April 10th approximately 35 students, parents, and staff members took the fight to Harrisburg to lobby the support of elected officials so that Eastern Academy Charter School will remain open. An observation of the engagement of the students with the media and elected officials speaks volumes as to why the work of Eastern Academy Charter School needs to continue for years to come. Prior to boarding the bus, students and parents were interviewed by Action News (Channel 6) and the students spoke with such passion and clarity that the news ran the story three times as a top story – 12 pm, 4 pm, and 6 pm.
Hands down, engaging students in the process of fight for the school’s future has been paramount – and most rewarding to witness. Full of energy and passion, students were organized into groups, armed with the key talking points, data, and information about the Academy, they met with elected officials and shared the reasons as to why Eastern Academy Charter School should continue to exist. When one of our 11th grade students, Briana Bailey, sat at the beautiful glass conference table of Republican State Senator Joe Scarnati, she said, “I feel like a BOSS.” In response, I said, that’s right. You should. You are in the halls of power for a great cause and you are making sure that your perspective and your voice is being heard. Another student said, “Mr. Barlow, I learned a lot today. I didn’t think that people would listen, but they were listening to us. This was a very fun experience.” Many students said, “Mr. Barlow, “What next?” “Who do we need to speak with next to make sure that our school remains open?”
One of the most powerful things our students learned from the Harrisburg Lobby trip was AGENCY – that is, when one believes that they have the power to take action and produce a favorable outcome.
Rest assured, the Academy Community is prepared to fight for our school and we are moving in the spirit of what Frederick Douglass wrote in his 1845 Narrative as he fought for his freedom:
“The strength of our determination was about to be fully tested. I was very active in explaining every difficulty, removing every doubt, dispelling every fear…assuring them that half was gained the instant we made a move; we had talked long enough; we were now ready to move; if not now, we never should be…”

9th Grade Student Flies A Plane
Ninth Grade student, Samir Cortez, had an experience that captures the very essence of what it means for us to be a Passion-Based School and to consistently provide students with real world learning opportunities aligned to their passion. Only in the 9th grade, Samir is serious about his passion for flying planes. Known for holding our students to the task of following through on their passion, Mrs. Whitaker arranged for Samir to take flying lessons at the Northeast Philadelphia Airport. To everyone’s surprise, the trainer allowed Samir to operate the plane during take-off, landing, and much of the FLIGHT.
It is these experiences – beyond the classroom that provide exposure and hope – that will ultimately change the trajectory of a young person’s life. It is our belief that experiences of this nature will catapult Samir to engage even more into the world of aviation, apply for flight school, and eventually do the things necessary to become a pilot. We are committed to doing everything that we can to set Samir up so he can follow-through on his passion.
Without a doubt, this is why Eastern Academy Charter School believes in passion and purpose for young people. When students see, feel, and touch the reality of their future, often the pain of their past, environment, and challenges disappear. Samir has wrestled with many challenges, yet he finally got in the Air and it is our plan to do whatever we can so that he may FLY into his Future.
The rich experiences that our students are getting from the real world learning opportunities is one of the primary reasons as to why we are prepared to go to any length to save our school. May you all continue to stand with us as we SAVE THE ACADEMY!!! Click here for more.
The mission of Eastern Academy Charter School is to provide a holistic, college-integrated learning community dedicated to the education of each student in the context of his/her unique interests. The school will provide students with an environment of excitement and early expectation through an integrative discovery-based learning experience that will develop logical reasoning, critical thinking, and purpose driven global citizens. The school will graduate self-directed, self-aware learners many of whom will have successfully mastered college level work.
